About

Forty-five years of charts. One school

Joni Patry spent twenty years as a Western astrologer before a single chart changed her mind. What follows is what she has done with the twenty-five years since.

One · Dallas, 1963

The question that has followed me since 1963

I grew up in Dallas. In November of 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated only a few miles from where I lived, and an astrologer named Jeane Dixon had cautioned him against traveling that day. The coincidence took hold of me early and has never released its grip.

If a warning can be given in advance — if foresight is possible at all — then what is the purpose of astrology, if not to offer it? That question became the whole of my calling. It is why I became an astrologer.

Two · Twenty years in

What I couldn't tell them was when

I practiced Western astrology professionally for twenty years. I was good at it. I had clients who came back year after year, and I could tell them a great deal about who they were.

But a chart would describe a person beautifully and then go quiet on the question they had actually come to ask — when does this change, when does it lift, how long do I have to hold on.

I could never settle for a system that told me who someone was but not what was coming. I started looking elsewhere out of frustration more than curiosity.

Three · The answer

Then I found Vedic astrology

The dasha system, the nakshatras, transits read against a sidereal zodiac that tracks where the stars actually are. It answered the question I had been asking since 1963. It turned astrology from description into prediction.

I never gave up what Western astrology taught me. I still read the outer planets, which classical Jyotish leaves out entirely, and I have spent twenty-five years working out where the two systems strengthen each other.

That is what Eastern Astrology for Western Minds means, and it is what I teach here.

Four · On the record

Recent predictions

World events are simply the predictions anyone can check. The same method that dates an election dates a job change, a move or a marriage — and that is what students learn to do here.

Five · Recognition

Recognized in the field

Joni holds the 2015 Jyotish Star of the Year award and Dr. B. V. Raman’s Janma Shatamanothsava Award, Jyotisha Choodamani. She has served on the faculty of ACVA and CVA, has published 15 books — several translated into Turkish — and maintains a Japanese-language site for her readers there.

She has been a keynote speaker at international conferences in England, India, Turkey, Austria and Canada, and has appeared on Fox News, Coast to Coast AM and Good Morning Texas as an authority on both Western and Vedic astrology.

She publishes the monthly Joni Patry’s Astrology Insights, which graduates are invited to write for.

The school · Founded 2016

She got tired of watching people learn this from YouTube

Joni started the University of Vedic Astrology because she kept meeting people who had been trying to teach themselves Jyotish for years and were still stuck.

Vedic astrology is a deep, technical system, and scattered videos in no particular order will not get anyone to the point of sitting down with a stranger’s chart and knowing what to say.

So she built the thing she wished had existed: the whole system, in sequence, taught the way she was taught — sitting down with real charts and building the framework piece by piece.

How it works · Six semesters

What actually happens when you enroll

01

Within 24 hours

A welcome note, your login, and access to every class in the semester. Nothing is drip-fed.

02

Eight weeks, or your own

Follow the live group and a semester takes eight weeks — six semesters in sequence. Or take longer. The classes do not expire.

03

Your own tutor

Every semester is guided by your tutor, who marks a graded test after each class in semesters 1 to 5.

04

Live classes, year-round

Webinars run year-round and all of them are recorded, so a missed session costs you nothing. See the schedule →

05

Your final exam, with Joni

To graduate you give a real reading to a real client, with Joni sitting in. She gives extensive feedback afterwards.

06

An AI study companion

Trained on the class material itself, so every answer points back to the class it came from. Revise between classes, or check your reasoning before an assignment.

07

The student forum

A Telegram group where students share charts and work through problems together. It runs itself.

08

Anywhere you happen to be

Everything lives on Thinkific — watch classes and sit your tests from a computer, tablet or phone. Nothing to install.

Paying up front

One semester free, and every webinar from day one

The full certification is $6,485 rather than $7,782 taken one semester at a time — a saving of $1,297, the price of a whole semester.

You can also sit in on any live session regardless of which semester you are testing in, including ones years ahead of you. Students say that is the single biggest benefit of paying up front.

Teaches the Jaimini astrology and relationship compatibility electives. A UVA graduate who published three books on Jaimini astrology and Relationship Astrology and now teaches it here.

She works as a consulting astrologer, teaches workshops, and teaches regularly at conferences including the FAC, the UAC and the Ireland Jyotish Conference.

The training Joni gave me created a foundation I still build on every day. It’s shaped everything from my consulting practice to the books I’ve written and the teaching I do at conferences around the world.

Graduates · What comes next

What graduates do next

Certification is the beginning of a practice, not the end of a programme. Graduates are invited to become paid tutors themselves, and to write for Joni Patry’s Astrology Insights.

Many go on to build their own practices. Some go further — Shreekala Ram graduated from UVA and now teaches her own Jaimini electives through the university.

From students

In their words

You get all the answers with a reading from an astrologer from time to time — but nothing beats understanding all the life answers through your own comprehension.

I’ve taken lectures from easily over half a dozen teachers, and yours is the best. Thank you for bringing home what I have been missing all these years. The framework, and how you build upon foundations, is excellent.
T. L. · Student
Even though I have studied astrology for many years, there is no ceiling to this science. There are always new ways of looking at the planets, and here I have expanded my understanding of Vedic astrology tenfold.
